Wednesday Roundup

Favorites and duds from today's commenting:

Favorites, in no particular order:

Here's another innovative screenplay joke, this time from Madoff's Mets in the Daily Screencap post. We seem to have entered the era of dialogue/screenplay jokes. We're seeing every variation of these, with unexpected punchlines. This is really a wonderful joke, this one: that it is a game of HORSE is successfully obscured, and though the punchline seems to be that Kobe is playing against himself, once you know it's a game of HORSE, going back and reading the descriptions of the shot-types is really a lot of fun, no matter who he's playing against.

This is a deeply unpleasant caption joke from Same Sad Echo in the Daily Screencap post. So gross. Also today, Same Sad Echo contributed this godawful wordplay joke in the Grand Canyon University post. This has almost become meta-humor now. Yes, I chuckled at it, but I chuckled at it because I am familiar enough with Same Sad Echo's body of work to guess that he's going for the whole wocka wocka wocka goofball routine. I'm not sure how funny that would be for a casual Deadspin reader, nor am I sure anyone would have paid much attention to this joke had it been made by, say, a burner. There's nothing wrong with that at all. In fact, I'm not sure what I'm going on about. Moving on . . .

Raysism cracked me up with this savvy dig at Eric Cantor in the VCU Volleyball post. Fuck that guy. Later, he fired one off at Florida in the Michael Jordan post, earning one hysterical reply from a total fucking moron. And, finally, Raysism turned his snark-beam on Samer Kalaf in the Remington Steele post. Can you believe this guy? The nerve, right!

Many tried to turn this outstanding title change from RMJ=H into a comedy pyramid in the Michael Jordan post, but really, this one stands alone. It's perfect, and you're just not going to find another joke in this vein that stands up to it. Hilarious.

It's hard to know what the hell is going on in this sequence from Mantis Toboggan, M.D. in the Michael Jordan post, but boy is it funny. That fucking reply with the photo is killer. I was pretty well incapacitated by this. The original joke is solid enough, perhaps in the same lame wordplay category as Same Sad Echo's joke above, but the reply . . . I don't know, it's just hysterical. Forgive me. Later, he went with this evil, evil wordplay/reference joke in the Grand Canyon University post. God almighty. That is so, so funny.

Here's your Comment of the Day, from Eddie Murray Sparkles in the Michael Jordan post. Nothing more needs to be said about that. It is goddamn perfect.

And finally, here's a terrific thread in the Remington Steele post featuring RMJ=H, Post ApocalypticRecSpecs, The Amazing Sneijderman, Danelorgy, Raysism, and TomSpanks12. Some really funny entries in there.

Total Fucking Duds

Here's some inane crap from a loser called Shamateur in the Dennis Rodman post. I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate this kind of "commentary" so much. This might be my least favorite thing about the post-Kinja Deadspin. Hur hur hur AH SHORE DO HATE THAT THANG PEOPLE LIKE hur hur. Take that crap back to ESPN, dummy.

And finally, I present for your consideration the odd, befuddling case of firdboss, a strange and terrible commenter I've been watching with increasing confusion. My inclination is to just link to his profile page and let you determine for yourself just what the fuck is going on with this guy. At times it seems like he's just typing out totally random phrases. As far as I can tell he's never been funny. Is this a ringer? Is it the return of an awful commenter from Deadspin's past, back to haunt us in the age of Kinja? One thing is certain: I hate his stuff.

Good work today, commenters! I left a good number of solid comments out there. If I missed your kick-ass joke today, blame your fellow commenters for posting too goddamn many funny things.

DUANy DUAN DUAN!

  1. Good stuff as always. Just wanted to point out this great RMJ=H effort, buried in the morass that was the Notre Dame beat writer Q&A.

  2. I completely agree with your analysis of my Grand Canyon joke. I would have laughed at it if it had been made by any number of established commenters - BronzeHammer or Ray or AMagicianNamedGod, let's say - but mostly (only?) because I would know that they were having a goof (which I was), and that it's not the kind of joke they would normally go for. If I was one of those bitter anonymous guys who has popped up complaining that DS is a bunch of back-slapping circle jerks, this would be Exhibit, oh let's say, H.

But I still thought it was funny. The Grand Canyon is really deep, you know.

  3. Couple of points:

    1) This was a great EMS gem that I think many missed.

    2) The comedy pyramid was funny because I'd originally intended it as an archeology joke pyramid. Kudos for Sneijderman for taking it in a funnier direction. That was great.

    3) I mentioned this on HFTE: do you do end of the year awards? You should. I think you're a worthy judge of best commenter. I've already submitted my ballot over there.

    4) Thanks for doing this every day. It has a palpable, positive impact on the comments. Really, it does.

    1. I'm going to be completely honest here: I don't get it. And I love Dexter Manley jokes. This would not be the first time EMS has been so much smarter than me that he's left me in his dust.

I think I will try to do some year end awards. I'll put together a post in the coming days with info about that.

      Thanks.

  4. That Michael Jordan post was hilarious, and Vuvuzelas comment and initial reply brought forth a most unattractive chortle.

Despite the puerile system we now have to work with, it's great to see my favourite commenters around; it helps us guys in the second, third, maybe fourth tier hold themselves to higher standards. It also helps to have you around, MBA.

    1. I think you're referring to the comment by Mantis Toboggan, M.D., right? I don't see anything from REV anywhere in there.

Some guys never left (Raysism, RMJ=H, SavetoFavorites), but when you see commenters like David Hume and MTMD and IronMike and Echo, it has to make you want to pay attention and jump back in.

Now, if we can just get Steve U and UweBollocks back in there, we'll be off and running.

It's funny, you're not the first person to confuse me with ol' Vuvs. Not that I mind [clenches teeth], because Vuvs is hilarious [perspires] and an all-around good dude [keels over].

Thanks for the shout-out, MS, and keep on truckin'. You rock.
