Thursday Roundup

Some favorites and a handful of duds from Thursday's commenting.

Favorites
, in no particular order:

MarkKelsosMigraine offered this hilarious rewriting of Layla in the Wake Up Deadspin post, earning a round of applause. Many lyric jokes don't work because they don't do enough, but in this case, MarkKelsosMigraine cleverly replaced just about every single lyric. Nice work.

All Over But The Sharting dropped several winners on Thursday. This was almost the same joke as MarkKelsosMigraine's in the Wake Up Deadspin post, but it came a little earlier and took a wildly different angle of approach. I enjoyed both versions. In the Miraculous Penalty Kick post, it was another hysterical Olive Garden joke. And in the MLB Draft Nepotism post, it was this sharp reference to my least favorite author in history. Great work.

Norm_De_Plume cracked me up with this awesome dig at J.J. Barea in the Wake Up Deadspin post. It's both a sharp dig and a clever wordplay joke. Nice job.

Eddie Murray Sparkles ripped off a series of winners on Thursday as well. This pull in the Miraculous Penalty Kick post is so typical of Eddie Murray Sparkles and his ability to find unique angles. This is a much simpler joke in the Ripped Tebow post, but no less effective. And finally, I laughed at this insensitive offering in the MC Bob Ley post. Delicious.

Here's an excellent reference from DJ Jazzy Jeff Weaver in the Miraculous Penalty Kick post. I had to look that one up, but it was well worth it.

Bevraj of Choice
slayed me with this Catholic Church joke in the MLB Draft Nepotism post. This is one of those jokes that makes you think "no way" after the first reading, and then you crack up after the second reading. So good.

And here's your terrific thread of the day, featuring SavetoFavorites, AzureTexan, Eddie Murray Sparkles, Steve_U, All Over But The Sharting, IronMikeGallego, and unstarred commenter ProfessorMean. The Mein Training Kampf line destroyed me.

AzureTexan didn't stop with the Mein Kampf line; this joke, also in the MLB Draft Nepotism post, cracked me up and earned a round of applause. Later, in the Nyjer Morgan post, a surprise appearance from Margot Kidder was good for a hearty chuckle. So good.

I enjoyed this long, obscured meta-comment from SavetoFavorites in the Ripped Tebow post. This guy blends sharp and silly better than anyone.

Also in the Ripped Tebow post, OnTheTwelfthNightOfLloydChristmas earned a round of applause with this hilarious dialogue joke. I'll admit, I had no idea where this joke was going. I was cringing a little bit. And that's a good thing. Tension successfully converted.

One of the day's very best comments came from Walk Off HBP in the Ripped Tebow post, with this wonderfully subtle Holy Tebow joke. A cascade of +1s followed.

I laughed aloud at this gross contribution from Fendi Hotdogbun in Drew's Dong Shots post. The crotch butter line was already uncomfortable, and Fendi Hotdogbun ramped it up into something wonderful.

MattinglysSideburns earned a round of applause with this clever reference, also in Drew's Dong Shots post. I came prepared for this one, having recently seen The King's Speech. Excellent job.

And finally, our guy Gamboa Constrictor killed me with this Tourette's joke in the Grantland Diction post. I had to look this one up too, but what a great reference.

Total Fucking Duds

Unstarred commenter HolyCow! submitted ye olde photo joke in the Ripped Tebow post. I suppose the joke here is "Tim Tebow is a big cry baby". If that's the case, obviously there's a funnier, more sophisticated way of making that joke than just submitting a picture of Tebow crying.

Also in the Ripped Tebow post, Fallopian Tubing went with ye equally olde O AN HE [SOMETHING]EXY meme. I recently said memes can't be declared dead, and I'm sticking to that, but this particular meme is so incredibly limiting by its nature, I wonder if a great joke can any longer be made with this framework. At any rate, this ain't it.

This effort, from willmmmm, in the Stephen A. Smith post, is just a little flat. Well, a lot flat. The joke here is that it's worth a lot of money to Wizards fans to see LeBron humiliated. Again, a more nuanced approach is called for here. This is almost not an attempt at humor. Find a way to package that in an impactful way.

And finally, in the Pacman Jones post, unstarred commenter Karen Owen's proud father helpfully offered this angry mess to the be funny file. Be funny, homes. Save the rants for DUAN or open threads.

That's all, folks. Remember to submit any deserving comments I might have missed to madbastardsall@gmail.com. I'm close to having enough to put something together.

One last thing: look for our long-awaited Guest Lecture in Commenting later tonight.

Gooooooo DUAN!

  1. I missed that you put SavetoFavorites' Tebow comment here the first time I looked over the roundup, and was just about to send you an e-mail saying you missed the best comment of the day. But of course you already had it. I should have known better. Keep up the great work.

Nah, I'm pretty sure Hatey McLife hates our guts.

I mean, even more than he hates everyone else's guts.

  4. Phintastic's comment in the Dolphin/Spanish soccer team post was great.

You got most of the other good ones, except for all of mine, you sumumabitch.

  5. @Shitehawk Oh, no, I just meant the one AJ posts with Hurdy Gurdy. It's been over a year already, but I guess the new design driving folks away means it is unnecessary.

  7. *Ahem* I would never have mentioned this in the thread but since some people so enjoyed the "Mein Training Kampf" line, I might draw your attention to Exhibit A:

Get out of my head, Texan.

And, +1 on another fine day's work

Oh man. Here's a +1. I never saw that one. When I read AzureTexan's line in that thread, I lost my shit.
